Excise the soft, the dangling parts of you

extending vulnerable to pain. It is

the only safe approach. Then don the gear

of battle, form yourself as though for war

like Caesar: he who must forever wear

his armor whole, continue eagle-eyed

against the foe. I put my hand into

the hole torn in my side. May I believe

this fight is just. Between the parapets

and anguish lies another vale. When we

are done with this I'll wash away these words.

We'll drink the water and the weakened ink.
