Polly Shindler — Spaces

Amy's House, 2017, Acrylic on canvas, 20” x 16”

The rooms I paint are imaginary. I begin with a piece of furniture that has no personal value and begin to visualize what else it would take to make this a room. I think of who lives in this space, what their choices are. How this place came to be. How different the occupant’s life is from mine. I imagine methods of comfort, motivation, isolation. How does a person create their own space? What do these spaces say about them? What do my spaces say about me? Each painting is a meditation on solitude.
